About Cappadocia 60 millions years ago in the 3rd geologic era, Taurus mountains rose in Cappadocia. With the compression of North Anatolian Plateau, Erciyes, Hasandağı and Güllüdağ volcanoes started ro erupt and spewed lava in the region. Ashes accumulated in plateau formed a soft tuff layer. The top of tuff layer was partly covered by a thin layer of lava which was constituted from rough basalt. Basalt cracked and was broken to pieces. Rain water leaking through these cracks caused to corrosion of the soft tuff. Warming and cooling air and wind also joined this formation. Thus, cones with rough-basalt-rock hats were formed. People named this distinctly and amazingly shaped rocks as “Fairy Chimneys”. Cappadocia containing Kırşehir, Niğde, Aksaray, Kayseri and Nevşehir, in particular is one of the most special regions of Anatolia, where nature and history are in perfect harmony. As the geographical events had been forming Fairy Chimneys, people had carved houses and churches into Fairy Chimneys and decorated them with frescoes. Thus, they carried traces of the thousands-year-old civilizations into present. The written history of Cappadocia where human settlements date back to paleolithic era begins with Hittites. Cappadocia that harboured merchant colonies throughout the history and built a commercial and social bridge between countries is one of the important crossroads of the Silk Road.

A stunning natural viewpoint and an open air museum, with its 1300 meters Uçhisar is the highest peak in the Cappadocia region. This rock citadel, whose name means “three fortresses”, lies on the Nevsehir-Goreme road, just 7 km east of the city of Nevsehir. Visible from a great distance in many parts of the region, the top of the village offers a spectacular panorama of the plateau, while its core hosts a maze of chapels, monasteries, Byzantine graves, connected to each other by stairs, tunnels and passages. Once in Uchisar, climb the 120 steps up to the Kale, the castle situated on the most beautiful and highest fairy chimney in the whole region. In the 15th and 16th century, the Byzantine army used the peak as a natural fortress, which still retains part of its original structure and rooms, that visitors can admire. From the summit, the breathtaking views of the Erciyes Mountain and Pigeon Valley are one of the most iconic images of Cappdocia.
