ABode Exeter Overview

As the first ABode Hotel, as well as the hometown of Michael Caines, this is where the ABode vision first began. Centrally located in the heart of Exeter's beautiful Cathedral Yard, and formerly the historic Royal Clarence Hotel, ABode Exeter has built upon a tradition of excellence and quality to create the city's most exciting venue. The hotel offers individual, contemporary design allied with tradition and understated elegance. There are 53 bedrooms, rated Comfortable, Desirable, Enviable and Fabulous. Bedrooms have been designed with a sense of luxury and relaxation so the guest can enjoy an ideal night's sleep, and wake up refreshed and rejuvenated. Bedrooms at all levels are well-equipped: trademark ABode features include Vi-Spring beds; bathrooms with monsoon showers; luxury toiletries; personal DVD players and state-of-the-art LCD televisions. Some rooms enjoy splendid views of the 12th gothic Cathedral. Michael Caines is at the heart of the ABode Exeter dining experience, consulting with the talented team of chefs to make the best use of the finest local and regional produce and ingredients from Devon and the South West. Whether you're in the mood for a first-rate pub meal with authentic cask ale in the Well House Tavern, a casual dinner with eclectic music in the Café Bar & Grill, a glass or two of something good in the Champagne and Cocktail Bar, or a tasteful and stunningly delicious three-course meal in the Michael Caines Restaurant, ABode Exeter offers something for everyone. The restored Cathedral and Clarence rooms provide the ideal venue for a stylish reception or private dining party, and the Regent room is fully equipped for a hi-tech conference or other corporate occasion. Whether it’s a workout in the well-equipped and comfortable residents’ gym, or a relaxing glass of wine in the sophisticated Champagne Bar, you will leave Exeter feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. ABode Exeter, on the beautiful Cathedral Yard, is your home from home, whatever the occasion.

Exeter, United Kingdom The City of Exeter lies on the East side of the River Exe on a ridge of land backed by a steep hill. In this point the river opens onto a wide flood plain and estuary. Historically this was the lowest crossing point of the river Exe that used to be navigable up to the city. until the construction of weirs later in its history. This combined with the easily defensible higher ground of the ridge made the current location of the city a natural choice for settlement and trade. In George Oliver's The History of the City of Exeter, it is noted that the most likely reasons for the original settling of what would become modern Exeter was the "fertility of the surrounding countryside" and the area's "beautiful and commanding elevation [and] its rapid and navigable river". Exeter sits predominantly on sandstone and conglomerate ridge which forms the backbone of the city, on which the Rougemont Castle is situated. The Cathedral is placed on the edge of this ridge and is therefore visible for a considerable distance.
