| Additional Information: | History The Beginning The Bingham is a Grade II listed Georgian building originally built as two houses in 1740, which were described in a rental survey for George III, carried out in 1773 as a “messeuge (a dwelling), court and garden” and a “messeuge with stables and coach house”. Lady Anne Bingham In 1821 Lady Anne Bingham leased the two properties and built what is now the Bingham Bar. The double height ceiling, and ornate cornicing is typical of the period and all the original features have been restored. Connection with the Lucan and Spencer families Lady Anne Bingham is a relation of the present Earl of Lucan and the infamous, missing Lord Lucan. Lady Bingham’s sister Lavinia, married the second Earl of Spencer. She was a keen painter and her book of paintings is still to be found at Althorp House, the family home of the late Princess of Wales. Michael Field From 1899, 1 the Paragon (the current West wing of the property) was occupied by two lady poets, Katherine Harris Bradley and Edith Emma Cooper who wrote under the pseudonym Michael Field. The following is an excerpt from We are Michael Field by Emma Donoghue (pub. Absolute Press 1998): “…what Edith called a ‘new home for our marriage’? They had only themselves to please; this was to be their final resting-place, their temple of love and beauty. The year before, the artists had moved to Richmond, a leafy suburb of London popular with literary and artistic folk. The Michaels wrote seeking guidance and possibly an invitation; they hinted that they longed for a river. Fay ordered them to move to Richmond immediately. For a rent of £70 a year the Michaels (found) a narrow Georgian House with a garden that sloped right down to the Thames, and a highly appropriate address: 1, The Paragon..... On many afternoons they gardened, in a spirit of pagan delight. (‘I have rubbed myself against Nature’s great, warm hand,’ Katherine wrote in 1891.) They only regretted that noisy ‘loafers & holiday makers’ were allowed to use the river tow-path behind the ivy-covered wall... In June 1902 Tommy brought along a dinner guest, the Irish poet and playwright, W.B.Yeats. (They were far from charmed the following year when Yeats asked to see their play Deidre For possible staging by the Abbey, then turned it down, only to produce his own play of the same name in 1907.) |
