Vikram Chatwal Sheds New Night on the
City that Never Sleeps
“And New York is the most beautiful city in the world? It is not far from it. No urban night is like the night there... Squares after squares of flame, set up and cut into the aether. Here is our poetry, for we have pulled down the stars to our will.”
-- Ezra Pound (1885-1972)
NEW YORK, January 2006 – Night holds the promise of the unexpected, that feeling that anything can happen between the hours from dawn to dusk. Inspired by the pulse and passion of New York City, Vikram Chatwal’s new Night Hotel (132 West 45th Street), is a stylish petite hotel of distinctive elegance. Night’s provocative charm, fashioned after it’s seductive muse,
Gotham City, will lure the urbane and nightcrawlers alike through its wrought-iron gates to gaze upon it’s dramatic funkadelic black and white interior.
Chatwal’s edge and signature approach to the hotel industry is to generate the pulse, character and individual identity of the city in which it is located in every aspect of the property. ”All
my hotels, (present and future), have a story, a connection to the heartbeat, culture and pure energy of the city they’re in,” says Chatwal, who also owns and conceptualized the Dream Hotel. “Night is my homage to New York, its drama, power, vitality and innate sensuality.”
Night Vision
Designed and conceptualized by Chatwal and Mark Zeff of Zeffdesign, an internationally acclaimed, full-service design consulting firm, Night was visualized as a “Gothic Gotham” – a
seamless synthesis of old world style and the 21st century. An intimate place to be shared, the 72-room hotel offers a sense of seclusion and privacy both in its design and accommodations. Night has the feel of a private residence, luxurious and cosmopolitan.
The hotel’s façade is unassuming and mysterious. Planters made of dark wood boxes contain modular sculpted greenery and flank the entrance on each side of Night’s entry. These
planters are in essence metaphoric soldiers guarding the entrance, while still beckoning guests inside.
A visual poem in black and white, Night’s interiors capture the excitement of New York after dark. Commenting on his play of light against dark, Zeff explains, “the black and white aesthetic is the background for Night… it is the people who visit Night that will create the color and energy.” Every detail throughout the hotel has been designed by Zeff for Chatwal, in effect, creating an exclusive private label that sets Night apart from any other hotel in New York City. Upon entering Night’s lobby, guests will be immediately drawn
to walls where custom-created black tiles reveal intense dimension, much like a multi-faceted gemstone. Below, unfolds a striking black carpet with a custom-made “night” logo echoed
throughout, beckoning all who enter to continue along the journey Night unleashes. As guests begin to embark on this journey, a vibrant and sultry lounge is discovered, placed justly at center stage in the lobby, creating the perfect place for patrons to begin or end their night in the city that never sleeps.
Night Re-Cap
The hotel’s adventure continues as guests enter their rooms, discovering a high-tech animated room number on a screen located beside their door. Defying the conventional wisdom of design, bold and dark rooms appear sexy and comfortable through the selection of textures, fabrics, and patterns.
Luxurious decadence embodies the comforts of Night, and as all good nights require a good night’s sleep, the focal point of each room is an enormous chariot bed faceted with an impressive headboard which resembles a sweeping black cape and fine Italian bedding designed by Frette. The bed is also outfitted with an elegant white duvet, plush white
pillows and a cloud-like “feather bed” making this experience truly heavenly.
Custom-designed furnishings complement their intimate surroundings such as a multi-purpose workspace ideal for a computer or make-up vanity and a specially commissioned, one-of-a-kind Steelcase piece that effortlessly converts from an office chair to a chaise, and features supple Coach black leather.
Just as the bedrooms display the original black and white color contrast, the bathrooms fail to disappoint as well, decked out in black, set-off only by a gleaming white floor. Guests can indulge in luxurious Molton Brown bath and body products when staying at Night. Small details are not overlooked as guests are able to complete their bath experience by slipping into Telegraph Hill, thick terry cloth robes, available in either black or white.
Old world charm comes into today, as each room provides the guests with complete state-of -the-art amenities such as: WiFi, Panasonic plasma flat screen TVs, BOSE sound systems (iPod ready with a CD wave system), Bang and Olufsen audio video system for the entire hotel, and black Nano iPods available upon request. As an added bonus, guests may also enjoy special access to the Chopra Center and Spa at the nearby Dream Hotel, and receive 20 percent off all treatments.
A Night to Remember
For guests seeking the ultimate experience, Night offers two penthouse suites, one being a duplex. While these penthouse suites are aesthetically similar to the guest rooms, they are designed on a much larger scale, with the black and white theme is taken to an unforgettable extreme. Perched atop the hotel, the penthouse suites offer commanding views of the city, contain plush couches and seating, private dressing rooms, offices and sprawling bathrooms, providing a comfortable entertaining space for small gatherings. For guests looking
for the ultimate VIP experience, the two suites can be conjoined allowing for an even larger living environment and a much more opulent stay.
Midnight Snack
For night owls, people in the know and hotel guests, restaurateur Alex Freij’s nightclub, the hotel’s restaurant and lounge offers dinner and 24-hour room-service. Signature menu items include “One Night Stand,” a Kobe beef hot dog, caramelized onions with truffle peach mustard; “Pacific Dip,” seared tuna, wasabi mayo, sesame foccacia, pickled cucumber and ponzu and Grilled Pizza with hamachi, apple and jalapeno. In addition to the a la carte menu, nightclub will spotlight one ingredient each week, such as tomato and banana and serve four to five specials featuring this ingredient. The 24-hour room-service menu boasts signature items for any craving such as Chili Fried Calamari with lime-tequila aioli and spicy tomato
sauces; Lobster Ravioli with roasted tomato, mozzarella and pesto and Smoked Paprika Roasted Chicken with mashed potatoes, spinach and raisin-verjus sauce.
The restaurant can be accessed through a glass arch, which runs from the entrance of the hotel, through the lobby, bar/restaurant, to the back outside courtyard. The dramatic solid black carpet leads one through this direction as well. Atop the restaurant itself, an eye catching series of Moroccan brass lighting fixtures are mounted on the ceiling in a grid pattern. Beneath the lighting, built in seating is available in the bar area. Surrounding the dining area are Venetian plastered walls, housing breathtaking canvas-style art made by a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist. These striking black and white paintings display circular rhythmic patterns that are brought to life by emitting a soft glow from the strategically placed backlighting. The intimate restaurant is comprised of forty-eight seats in the main room and six at the bar and lounge. Outside the restaurant a secret, surreal Night hideaway calls to be discovered -- a courtyard designed out of mirrors and grated pebbles that artfully grace the floor – offers the perfect escape.
Good Night
Chatwal’s signature attention to detail can be found throughout the hotel, and notably in the custom-made personal business cards each guest receives when they check in, displaying the
guest’s name, Night residence and phone number. Equally as creative, but a bit more naughty are the gothic N tattoos (not permanent of course) available to all guests.
Each of Night’s 72-rooms can be reached via elevator, or by ascending the old world marble staircase to any of the eight floors. An array of accommodations are available including seven standard rooms, thirty-seven king rooms and eighteen queen rooms. Rates range from $275 -- 525/night for the preceding accommodations and $1,500 -- $2,500/night for the penthouse suites.
