Mykonos, Greece
If you wonder why the colours of Greece's flag are blue and white you will get an answer in this wonderful island, which is part of the Aegean group of islands called Cyclades and lies between Tinos, Syros, Naxos and Paros. The capital of the island, Hora (called also Chora or Mykonos Town) is particularly charming and considered as one of the most beautiful little cities of the Cyclades. It is representative of the island's architecture with whitewashed cubic houses with flat roofs, blue doors and windows, narrow paved streets, flowered balconies and a picturesque and magic atmosphere. The hue of blue paint perfectly matches the crystal blue water of its delightful beaches (there's even a beach called Paradise and another called Super Paradise) and the blue of the sky. This ravishing scenery looks like an Aegean daydream which comes to life. Other endearing images of Mykonos are the wonderful mountainous landscapes, beautiful churches, small chapels where inside you can experience something both eerie and magical at the same time; the pure white Five Windmills (on the western tip of the town) which represent one of the island's most recognized landmarks and which nowadays see more cameras flashing than grain or wheat thanks to their such unique aesthetics. And more Northeast of the windmills, the area of town where you see buildings constructed right on the water's edge with their balconies overhanging the breaking waves is appropriately referred to as Little Venice. This is also the artist's quarters and one of the best spots to view the sunset. What is missing? The pelicans that have gained a sort of celebrity status, cherished by locals and admired by visitors!
