Lijiang, China
The city of Lijiang lies in the northwestern part of Yunnan, in a region where the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau meet. The renowned Old Town of Lijiang is a UNESCO Heritage Site as the citydates back to more than 800 years ago and it has the best preserved ancient town in China. The local economy of ancient Lijiang peaked with the development of the Tea-Horse Road, contributing to the commercial and cultural interaction between the Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. Nowadays Lijiang is the main region inhabited by one of China's 55 minority ethnic groups, the Naxi, that have set up their Dong Ba Culture, absorbing qualities of the culture of Tibet and the Central Plains. The Old Town of Lijiang maintains the original zest of the local lifestyle, the typical groups of buildings and the intense cultural heritage of the region.
