The region of Connemara, which lies between Lough Corrib and the Atlantic, is renowned throughout the world for its beauty. Its craggy mountain peaks, large sandy beaches and numerous lakes exemplify the peaceful solitude and rugged beauty of western Ireland. Connemara's mountain range - the Twelve Bens (Na Beanna Beola) - varying settlement patterns, and dramatic contrasts of sea, sky, land and bog, have inspired many famous artists over the years. Referred to as a "savage beauty" by Irish writer Oscar Wilde, Connemara was traditionally divided into North Connemara and South Connemara. Connemara, from Conmhaicne Mara (descendants of Con Mhac, of the sea), is one of the few remaining areas of the country where the native Irish language remains in everyday use. The rich linguistic, musical and folklore heritage, as well as many other aspects of traditional Irish culture have also been preserved in this region. The airport is located about 35 km west of Galway city along the coast at the town of Inverin. The airport sits just under the boundary of the Shannon CTA for the approach to runway 08 at Carnmore.
