Chilean Patagonia, Chile
Chilean Patagonia offers all the dramatic scenery one would anticipate from the world's ultimate extremity of land. Here the South American continent turns into a stunning explosion of islands, glaciers, icebergs and mountains. Really one of Mother Nature's definitive masterpiece. Chilean Patagonia is composed of two sub-regions, Aisen to the northern and Magallanes to its south. Aisen hosts the Laguna San Rafael National Park, while Magellanes is home to the unique Torres del Paine National Park. Cut off from the rest of Chile by severe storms and steep mountains, Magellanes is inaccessible if not by air or overland from Argentina. Framing the Park of the same name, the Torres del Paine, is a spectacular mountain range that extends to heights of up to 9,000 feet; Among the various landmarks of this extraordinary region are the Cuernos del Paine, with a height of 6,300 feet; the mesmerizing waterfalls of Salto Chico and Salto Grande; the Grey, Pingo, del Frances and Dickson glaciers and a variety of lakes. A true paradise for diehard adventurers.
