Santorini, a circa 200 km a sud-est dalla terraferma greca, è un piccolo arcipelago di isole vulcaniche situate nel mare Egeo del sud, il più meridionale delle Cicladi. Santorini è ciò che rimane di un’enorme esplosione vulcanica che distrusse gli stanziamenti su una precedente unica isola e che portò alla formazione dell’attuale caldera. Il nome Santorini deriva dalla sua denominazione latina del tredicesimo secolo che si riferiva a Santa Irene. Santorini è stata unita alla Grecia nel 1912. I principali villaggi sono Fira (Phira), Oia, Emporio, Kamari, Imerovigli, Pyros, Therasia, e Akrotiri, uno dei maggiori siti archeologici con rovine dell’epoca Minoica. L’attività economica principale sull’isola è il turismo, specialmente nei mesi estivi.
