Torroella De Montgrí, Espanha
Torroella de Montgrí is a town in the Baix Empordà county, Catalonia. The town is situated in a plain at the foot of the Montgrí Massif, on the north bank of the Ter River and 6 km from the Mediterranean coast. Torroella de Montgrí boasts a temperate-moderate climate with warm and dry summers and mild winters. Although the town is not among the most popular Spanish destinations, Torroella has a lot to offer visitors who wish to discover a traditional Empordà market town. Torroella was originally the Royal Port for the Kings of Aragon before the river started silting up, the town still retains its medieval core and walls. The city is an ideal place to stroll around and discover traces from the past that tell the history of the town. The original layout of Torroella dates back to 1273 and can still be seen in the regular grid of streets that converge onto the main square: Carrer d´Ullà, Carrer Primitiu Artigas, Carrer Major and Carrer de l´Església are the four main streets that lead onto the beautiful porticoed Plaça de la Vila, the ideal starting point for a first visit of Torroella. The town is rich in historical gems: Santa Caterina gate and the Torre de les Bruixes, remains of the old town walls; the gothic church of Sant Genís and the Montgrí Castle are 11th century treasures; the 16th-17th century Casa Pastors and Casa del Metge on Carrer Major, and the colonial houses built by successful emigrants returning from the Americas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Do not forget to visit the Monday morning market, the soul of this agricultural and fertile area.
