San MartÃn de los Andes is one of the most emblematic Andean cities in Patagonia, Argentina. The town is situated in the province of Neuquén, at the foot of the Andes, beside the Lácar Lake, 45 km from the border with Chile and about 1,545 km from Buenos Aires. The area of San MartÃn has a population of about 24,000 inhabitants, including its surroundings. The architecture of San MartÃn de los Andes, with its stone and wood, is modeled in the style of a European alpine village and, just like any town in the Alps, it is a very popular tourist destination either for the ski season or the summer, thanks to one of the most spectacular landscapes in Patagonia. In summer visitors may enjoy adventure sports like kayaking, mountain biking, trekking, rafting, horse riding and trout and salmon fly-fishing. Golf is also popular, and can be played about 10 months a year on the Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II designed Chapelco Golf Club. During winter, the city is the perfect location for the practice of winter sports, such as ski and snowboarding. Mount Chapelco, located a few kilometers away from the city, is the ideal site to approach the essence of snow. A whole range of varied activities are offered, from snowshoeing to sliding across the forest on a sled pulled by Siberian Huskies. San MartÃn de los Andes is also famous for its handcrafted artisan arts and crafts and local culinary delicacies like gourmet hand made chocolates, pastries, organic jams and preserves. San MartÃn de los Andes may be accessed either by land or by air. The local airport is at about 20 kilometers away from town. The well-known Seven Lakes Road joins it with the majestic City of Bariloche. From Buenos Aires, drivers must travel 1,600 kilometers to reach this Andean paradise.
