En tiempos romanos, cuando era conocida como Patavium, Padua era uno de los pueblos más importantes del norte de Italia. De todas las ciudades norteñas de Italia, esta es una de las más carismáticas. Una de las razones de su encanto se puede deber a que hay una menor afluencia de turistas en comparación con otras ciudades como Milán y Venecia, algo sorprendente dado que es un lugar rico en cultura y posee una atmósfera serena envidiable. El pueblo en si esta situado a lo largo del río Bachiglione, a tan solo 20 Km. de Venecia. La historia de Padua data de antes del año 300 AC. Durante el periodo del imperio Romano, este era un lugar de gran cultura y hogar de un sinnúmero de grandes escritores latinos, incluyendo Livy. Mas adelante, durante el periodo del renacimiento italiano, grandes maestros, como Galileo, enseñaron en su universidad, una de las más viejas de Europa, construida en el año 1222, y un gran número de artistas brillantes, como Donatello y Miguel Ángel, vivieron o visitaron la ciudad.
