El Calafate, Argentina
Situated in the southern border of Lake Argentino, El Calafate is a tiny village in Patagonia, Argentina. Its name derives from the calafate, a little bush with dark blue berries and yellow flowers that is very widespread in Patagonia. El Calafate is a major tourist destination for it is a hub for visiting different parts of the Los Glaciares National Park, including the Perito Moreno Glacier (one of the most visited in the world) and the Cerro Chalten and Cerro Torre. The 5000 inhabitants of the village of El Calafate have made of hospitality a cult. It is a peaceful and charming community that dates from 1913. A breathtaking heaven of tranquility and vegetation, El Calafate is where the Patagonian beauties are revealed in all their splendor. It is a place where lakes, steppes, woods, mountains, and glaciers coexist with the rich local flora and fauna. Presently, it is a major tourist center, with picturesque houses, shops, restaurants, and handicraft stores. El Calafate has gained both national and international magnitude as all the glacial circuits start there: Viedma Glacier, Upsala Glacier, Onelli Glacier, Spegazzini Glacier, Mayo Glacier, Frias Glacier, and Perito Moreno Glacier known as "the eighth wonder of the world" and nominated World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981.
