Singapore, once a quiet fishing village, was founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles, an official of the British East India Company, who though it was an ideal location for a trading post. Since then it has become one of the world's most prosperous cities. Known as the Lion City, Singapore is by far the largest and most significant island among the others that constitute the state of Singapore. Here, Asian tradition meets modern technology - glinting skyscrapers tower over traditional dwellings, while Chinese and Hindu temples dot the city. Singapore is an interesting combination of ancient and modern. The city is home to an ethnic mix of Chinese, Malays and Indians, as well as expats from all over the world, in a mostly English-speaking society. Its free trade policy as has led to an extraordinary rise in the standard of living and exponential economic growth, due mainly to the export industry. Singapore is frequently designated as Asia's top business destination, and is regarded as one of the finest places for international conferences, conventions and exhibitions. Singapore will host the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics.
