Andorra la Vella is the capital of the Principality of Andorra, one of the smallest nations in the world. Andorra's independence is traditionally credited to Charlemagne, who regained possession the region from the Muslims in 803 AD, and to his son Louis I the Pious, who granted its inhabitants a charter of liberties.
